Ballon d’or 2021 Winner List – Messi Has Made History Gives Lewandowski A Mention

Messi has made history this evening by winning a SEVENTH Ballon d’Or! What a player he is! Is he the greatest of all time? His record in this award certainly suggests so!

The 34-year-old won this award for the first time back in 2009. Luis Suarez is now on stage to hand Messi the trophy.

“I don’t know how many years I have left, but I hope there will still be many because I am having enormous fun,” Messi said at the France Football ceremony where he picked up his seventh Ballon d’Or before praising Lewandowski, who was the favourite to win the 2020 Ballon d’Or until it was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“You deserve your Ballon d’Or,” the Argentine added. “Last year, everyone was in agreement to say that you were the big winner.”

MESSI WINS THE 2021 BALLON D’OR!

Lionel Messi has won an historic seventh Ballon d’Or after picking up the prestigious individual award at a ceremony in Paris.

The 34-year-old has now won the Ballon d’Or in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2021, meaning he has lifted the prize handed to the best player in world football more times than any other male player in its history, two clear of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi beat out Robert Lewandowski who finished in second place and Chelsea midfielder Jorghino who was ranked third in the voting.

THE SEVENTH TROPHY SETTLES THE CRISTIANO RONALDO DEBATE ONCE AND FOR ALL. LIONEL MESSI WINS THE BALLON D’OR 2021

Lionel Messi won a record seventh Ballon d’Or ahead of Robert Lewandowski and Jorginho meaning he has now won two more than Cristiano Ronaldo. At this point, the debate has been settled. Messi is the greatest player the game has ever seen and the sight of his seven Ballon d’Or trophies is a symbol of this.

Lionel Messi might still be getting used to his new surroundings as a Paris Saint-Germain player, but the French capital is a familiar setting for him. After all, it’s where the 34-year-old has been crowned the best male player in the world many times over the course of his career with France Football handing Messi a record seventh Ballon d’Or on Monday night.
One wonders how Cristiano Ronaldo, sat at home amid a public row with France Football editor-in-chief Pascal Ferre over claims that his last ambition in football is to win more Ballons d’Or than Messi, reacted to seeing his great adversary with another golden ball in his clutches.
The personal duel between Messi and Ronaldo has defined an entire era of football at the elite level with fans divided into two camps over who they believe to be the greatest of all-time (GOAT). A certain tribalism has developed around the two players such is the strength of feeling on both sides.

However, the award of a seventh Ballon d’Or proves once and for all that Messi stands taller than all others, even Ronaldo who appears destined to end his career on five. The exact criteria for winning the Ballon d’Or might be disputed, but nobody can deny the symbolism of Messi’s haul.
The argument that Robert Lewandowski should have won the 2021 Ballon d’Or ahead of Messi is a strong one. Indeed, the Bayern Munich and Poland striker enjoyed an exceptional 12 months, breaking Gerd Muller’s long-standing record for the most goals in a single Bundesliga season and setting the pace for the most goals at the top of the European game for club and country. He was unmatched in that respect.
Messi himself even acknowledged Lewandowski’s achievements over the last two years as he accepted the 2021 Ballon d’Or on stage. “You deserve your Ballon d’Or,” the Paris Saint-Germain player said. “Last year, everyone was in agreement to say that you were the big winner.”
However, if Messi’s seventh Ballon d’Or is reflective of his body of work over the last decade or so, there should be no disgruntlement. The 34-year-old has faced some difficult circumstances in recent years, from Barcelona’s financial crisis to criticism in Argentina over his performances for the national team, but he still somehow manages to keep his standard higher than anyone else’s.
PSG have yet to see the best of Messi, but history tells us he will find a way to shine through. It’s possible there is still some trauma left over from the summer and the painful parting from Barcelona with Mauricio Pochettino still working to find a system to harness Messi. He is, however, too good not to succeed at the Parc des Princes.
There is a growing sense that a generational shift is taking place at the top of the European game. Signs of a personal duel between Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe have many anticipating another Messi v Ronaldo-esque rivalry, but the Old Guard aren’t ready to step aside just yet, certainly not in the case of the former.
A new challenge at PSG could bring even more out of Messi. He’d started to look somewhat detached, even disinterested, towards the end of his time at Barcelona, but now has a new goal to work towards in the French capital. His doubters should look at how he dragged Argentina to their first international title since 1993 in the summer. What Messi sets out to achieve, he achieves.
These may be Messi’s twilight years, but the light still shines on him. The shimmer from his seven Ballon d’Or trophies are the sign of a glittering career that still isn’t finished. It would be foolish to count against the GOAT from getting his hands on the prize for an eighth time, but at this point it’s immaterial. The debate has been settled.

CHELSEA ARE CLUB OF THE YEAR

2021 was a memorable one for Chelsea and they have been handed the award for the Club of the Year!

Of course, Thomas Tuchel’s team won the Champions League and are top of the Premier League while Emma Hayes’ side made the final of the Women’s Champions League last season.

It is a rather odd choice by France Football, holding one of football’s most prestigious events, the Ballon d’Or award show, on a Monday night after cancelling its previous edition due to COVID. Although the red carpet was still a banger — and so was Chelsea legend Didier Drogba’s hosting of the event —, it takes off some of the glamour that the usual weekend-running award events in other entertainment formats have.

But enough about poor managerial choices! It is time to talk about the winners, which there were plenty.

The Ballon d’Or this year had a couple of “surprise” awards to the public, caught unaware by their presence even though they make a lot of sense in the great scheme of things. One of which was the Club of the Year award, with its first recipient being none other than ourselves!

It would be very hard to argue against rewarding Chelsea the Ballon d’Or for their feats last season, both at the men and women levels. The former won their second ever Champions League title against all odds, beating clear favourites Manchester City in a marvellous night here in Porto. Whereas the latter was a tour de force at the domestic level, handily winning the Women’s Super League and the League Cup while getting to the Women’s Champions League final for the first time in history.

The second surprise award was Striker of the Year. The year in which we lost footballing legend Gerd Müller, was also the year where fellow Bayern Munich legend Robert Lewandowski broke his 40-goal record in the Bundesliga which stood unbeaten for almost 50 years. The Polish international was the deserved recipient of the prize.

The Koka Trophy, handed by France Football to the best player under 21 in the world, was given to young Barcelona midfielder, Pedri.

From them on, all eyes were on the most prestigious awards of the night. The Yashin Trophy, named after Soviet Union goalkeeping revolutionary Lev Yashin, had our Édouard Mendy in the running following his heroics to help us win the Champions League last season.

That is when injustice would begin. Although Gianluigi Donnarumma is a great goalkeeper, and was very important to both AC Milan and European champions Italy throughout last season, Mendy was one of the missing pieces in a puzzle that resulted in the ultimate European glory for the Blues.

Mendy came in second in the list, followed by Atlético Madrid’s Jan Oblak, Manchester City’s Ederson and Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer.

The Women’s Ballon d’Or was perhaps Chelsea’s best chance of earning individual glory, given the lost opportunity in the Yashin Trophy. However Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas, who has been one of the keys in transforming the Catalans into a juggernauts in women’s football, got the award over Sam Kerr, Fran Kirby, Pernille Harder, Magdalena Eriksson, and Jessie Fleming.

The men’s counterpart of the Ballon d’Or is still the most important prize of the night. Some felt there was a real chance for Chelsea midfielder Jorginho to win it, given how he was clearly the most decorated player of last season by leading winning efforts in both the Champions League and the European Championship.

But some things will never change.

A seventh Ballon d’Or to Lionel Messi, formerly of Barcelona and now at Paris Saint-Germain. At the very least the point advantage to second place, Lewandowski, was only of 33 points. Whereas Jorginho was 120 points behind Lewa, with 460 total.

It was not our night in terms of individual plaudits. But football is a collective effort, and I would not mind seeing Chelsea winning the Club of the Year award for seasons to come in exchange for another 50 years of Messi-Ronaldo exchanges of Ballons d’Or.
