Barcelona and Real Madrid meet in the always eagerly-anticipated Clasico at the Nou Camp.
Carlo Ancelotti‘s team have certainly enjoyed the better start to the season of the pair and can return to the top of LaLiga – for a few hours at least – with a favourable result.
Barcelona can climb the table, potentially up into the top four, if they take the points.

Wow what an astonishing ending. Two goals in the final two minutes.
It puts only a little gloss on the evening for Barca though.
Fans are leaving the Camp Nou. Is that it for Koeman?
Oh how cruel! Real immediately counter from Barca’s great chance, Asensio flying into the box. His shot is saved but the rebound comes to Vasquez, who bullies Eric Garcia to get ahead and poke the ball in.
Real Madrid 2-0 up.
That’s all folks.
Lots of time for a game-changer!
The Real keeper has gone down after hoofing the ball clear. No Barca player was near him. He’s getting treatment. The referee will surely be looking at his watch.
He grimaces but he will continue.
Koeman’s men keep trying to attack but again it’s a poor final ball which is easy for Courtois to claim. That sort of sums up Barca today.
Unsurprisingly the crowd aren’t happy about this. But Valverde is struggling with his knee too. Vinicius goes off to whistles for time-wasting.
He’s eventually replaced by Marco Asensio.
Luuk de Jong comes on (to boos) for Gavi.
Depay has been dangerous out on the left. This time he finds a decent cross to the back post but its just too high for Aguero, who can’t direct his header properly.
Urgh, that looked painful. Pique and Valverde both compete manfully for the ball in the air and clash their heads together. Both crumple in a heap and immediately get treatment.
Aguero gets the crowd roaring as he battles down the wing with Mendy but like so much Barca have done today, it comes to nothing ultimately.
Mendy is booked for time-wasting.
Real are continuing to be patient, sitting deep while Barca have the ball. They have had a couple of hairy moments but it’s generally working for them.
Frenkie de Jong makes way for Sergi Roberto.
A decent period of possession in the Real half sees Barca find the ball to Coutinho in the box, but he’s well blocked.
So, Sergio Aguero makes his Clasico debut, coming on for Ansu Fati.
Earlier, Federico Valverde came on for Rodrygo for Real Madrid.
Oh Karim! He gets in between the defenders on the penalty spot but totally fluffs the shot as the ball is a bit behind him.
Ah, it was offside anyway.
Gaps are appearing all over the pith and both teams are trying to make the most of them. It’s resulting in a very good game but Real always look the more threatening.
Real break on the counter but for once look ponderous themselves, Vinicius taking too long to make his decision and being crowded out. But Barca give the ball away cheaply and let Vinicius in again but he shoots wide
Barca waste another good free-kick opportunity, Jordi Alba sailing the ball over everyone in the box for Courtois to punch clear easily.
Brilliant from Real, they really are taking control here. A corner is followed by Real working the ball to Modric on the edge of the box. His shot is blocked, and Real win it back to recycle the ball to the left. Modric runs into the box, flicks a ball over the top to Benzema, whose fierce shot is saved by Ter Stegen. Great stuff from Los Blancos.
Oh dear that could’ve been a howler! Militao plays a long ball wide to Vinicius, which Dest doesn’t get to and the Brazilian gets in behind. Dest recovers just about to get ahead of Vinicius and hack the ball away.
Gerard Pique goes in the book for arguing too much with the referee over a potential handball. Silly.
Barca drive forward well through Coutinho, and work the ball wide searching for an angle into Real’s box. They are forced wide and dink a cross to the back post, but no-one there. They need someone to get on the end of these crosses.
Real Madrid keep the ball through fine work wide from Benzema. It comes back to Mendy who surges forward and a fires a shot straight at Ter Stegen. Easy but good intent.
There’s a coming together between Gavi and Mendy, with the Real player putting his arm across Gavi’s chest. The crowd fire up, hoping for the first card, but it’s nothing really.
Real build from midfield comfortably, Modric pulling the strings. The ball comes to Rodrigo who fires a cross-shot into the box which Barca clear. It’s end to end again.
Another Barca chance! Fati latches onto another cross into the box and hits it first time straight at Courtois who palms it away.
Lovely play from Ansu Fati who picks up the ball wide from Coutinho and passes into the box to Depay. His flick finds Coutinho whose shot is blocked wide for a corner. Great early stuff from Barca.
Gavi takes the ball wide and fires a ball across the box that beats everyone. But that’s what Koeman will want to see, as both Coutinho and Ansu Fati were in the box.
Koeman has made his first change, Philippe Coutinho coming on for Oscar Mingueza. That would suggest Dest will move back into full-back and Coutinho will bolster Barca’s midfield.
Gerard Pique almost walks into the camera he seems so keen to get back out on the pitch. Hopefully the rest of his team have this attitude too, because Barcelona need to raise their game here.
Just in case you hadn’t heard, there’s quite a big game going on in the North-West today as well.
Fortunately we’ve got you covered here too.
The teams go into the tunnel at half-time with Real the happier of the two teams. Their tactics have been spot on, allowing Barca to come onto them and hitting them hard on the break. Alaba’s goal is the difference but Real have got in behind Barca on several occasions, which will be a worry for Ronald Koeman.
Barca haven’t been completely passive, with a couple of great chances to score, but they’ve been slow in possession and not made the most of the many corners they have won. They definitely need to up the pace and sharpen their passing if they want to get back into this Clasico.
Second half coming up shortly!
It’s been a fairly free-flowing first half with few big stoppages.
Block from Alaba! Barca recover the ball from a poor Real clearance. The ball comes to Ansu Fati in the box, who tries to work an angle before shooting from the penalty spot before Alaba comes to Real’s rescue. A real chance before half-time!
Yet another Barca corner ends in yet another Real counter attack, which ends with some passing in midfield before Real lose it. Barca really have to make one of these corners count.
Ronald Koeman has just sent Philippe Coutinho out to warm up.
Real now turn the screw and the ball finds Rodrigo on the edge of the box, whose snap strike draws a reflex save from Ter Stegen, but the referee had blown for a foul.
Barca’s corner is defending and Courtois sends Vinicius on the counter. He finds Benzema out wide who floats a cross that Jordi Alba heads away. Another searing Real counter-attack
Barcelona are desperately trying to claw this back, another corner won by a delfected shot by Eric Garcia.
Depay’s corner is met with a brilliant leap from Gerard Pique. Moving away from goal he nearly steers it into the far corner but it goes just wide.
Barca look to respond immediately with a free-kick from the left side into the box that Vasquez heads over for a corner.
What a finish from David Alaba, of all players! Depay is hassled off the ball by Alaba outside Real’s box and then the counter is on. Rodrigo threads a fine ball to Alaba, who continued his run. He carries the ball, looks around, gets to the edge of the box and fires a rocket past Ter Stegen. Perfect strike and Real Madrid are 1-0 up!
Barca’s early possession dominance has been wiped out as on the half-hour mark Real have had 53% of the ball. They are beginning to make things happen at the Camp Nou.
This time Benzema runs in behind but is just offside as he slashes the ball wide from a tough angle.
Barca are all over a flustered Real defence, getting a free-kick out wide but Depay crosses it harmlessly straight to Courtois.
Depay does brilliantly to hold up the ball and turn, then tries to play Ansu Fati into the box. He missed and it rolls to Dest, with the goal gaping and Courtois to beat, and he blasts it over the bar. Terrible miss!
Karim Benzema drops deep and threads a lovely ball through the middle to Vinicius, who is clearly offside. But play continues and Vini doesn’t finish before the flag finally goes up.
Wonderful trickery from Vinicius sees him drive into the box and go down under a challenge from Mingueza. The referee is unmoved, Ancelotti can’t believe it. But VAR aren’t interested and it looks to be a very good decision.
It’s been a tense opening 20 minutes, with Barcelona showing the greater thrust but Real content to sit and wait and pick their opportunities, which resulted in them winning two corners so far. Gripping stuff.
Barca are pressing their game plan on Real, carrying the ball high from the back and finding their attackers. Memphis Depay is crowded out but looks as though he should’ve got a throw-in for his troubles but it went Real’s way.
Rash from Ansu Fati. Real were under serious pressure in their own corner, but the young attacker unnecessarily pushes Mendy and gives away a needless free-kick. That could have been much more serious for Real.
Kroos floats one in that Barca head out for another corner. Barca clear the second and break with Ansu Fati, but it fizzles out on the right hand side and ends with a foul on Mendy. Real growing into the game
Real Madrid remind Barca they have their own wide threats, Mingueza getting too tight to Vinicius Junior and conceding the foul.
Memphis Depay gets one-on-one against Vasquez and draws a heavy foul. The yellow card could have come out. Barca may look to exploit that side throughout the match.
Barca’s press appears to be working as Real are loose in possession, Vasquez miscontrolling a simple ball out wide to give Barca a throw-in just outside Real’s penalty area.
Barcelona are enjoying all the possession in these opening minutes. Real look content to soak up some early pressure and see the lay of the land.
Real Madrid are held up in the middle of the pitch as Toni Kroos is brought down by the great disruptor Sergio Busquets.
Jordi Alba intercepts high up the pitch and tries to put Ansu Fati in who goes down under the challenge in the box from Militao, but the referee is rightly having none of it. No great appeal from Ansu Fati either.
Ansu Fati shows he’s really up for it with a foul on Mendy within the first 30 seconds.
Barcelona get us underway!
The players are lined up on the pitch, the formalities are nearly over. The stadium looks a picture in the early evening Barcelona sun.
We’re almost there!
Ansu Fati is one of the brightest hopes in Barcelona’s squad. Many believe he can take on the mantle left by Messi and be the jewel in a new crown of younger Barca superstars.
Can he make his mark on the Clasico today?
Both teams have completed their warm-ups, Real players leaving the pitch to a deafening chorus of boos. Barca have had trouble filling the Camp Nou in recent matches, but it doesn’t seem like that will be a problem this afternoon.
It would be remiss not to mention that Benzema’s red-hot form has come in the midst of his being involved in a criminal trial in France for alleged blackmail over a sex tape of former team-mate Mathieu Valbuena.
On Thursday Benzema’s lawyers called for the charges against him to be dismissed.
Karim Benzema has been in simply electric form for Real this season. He’s already scored nine goals in eight LaLiga games, and contributed seven assists.
Barca’s fate could hang on whether they can contain the Frenchman, who is clearly equally capable of scoring goals and helping his team-mates to do so.
This is, remarkably, the first Clasico to take place without either Lionel Messi or Sergio Ramos since 2005.
Both players, the beating hearts of their respective Clasico sides for so long, are now team-mates at PSG. Symmetry, of a sort.
Nice to know there’s an official Clasico lunch. Wonder what’s on the menu?
Things have (very) recently been looking up for Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona. With two wins on the bounce and a new contract for Ansu Fati, is there a tiny silver lining emerging amid the very dark clouds? Once again Pete Jenson has you covered.
A player that many have questioned over whether he’s good enough for Real is Vinicius Junior. Having made a flying start to LaLiga, here’s our Pete Jenson explaining why today’s Clasico could be the young Brazilian’s moment.
No surprises that Carlo Ancelotti has opted to name an unchanged side from the one that hammered Shahktar Donetsk 5-0 in the Champions League in midweek. It’s a Clasico debut for the highly decorated David Alaba.
Ronald Koeman has a few crucial players missing such as Pedri and Ronald Araujo, but the good news is Jordi Alba is fit to start.
There are two changes from the win over Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League: Ansu Fati and Eric Garcia start ahead of Luuk de Jong and Clement Lenglet. Superstar Gavi, just 17, makes his first appearance against Real Madrid.
There’s nothing quite like a Clasico, regardless of where both teams are in the league. Over the years we’ve become accustomed to seeing them duke it out for the top of LaLiga, just as we’ve become used to seeing a certain diminutive Argentinian at the centre of it.
But Lionel Messi is no longer part of the Clasico furniture, and both Real Madrid and Barcelona are not the powers they once were. Real may currently have the bragging rights, sitting third in the league against Barca’s eighth, but a win for Ronald Koeman’s men will see them overtake Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Sounds like motivation enough for a potential humdinger!
